One of Michelle’s first projects after relocating to Sandpoint Idaho, was that of Ken and Rae Charlton. The project was a remodel of an old home that was structurally sound but in need of serious updating. Many discussions were had about how to revise the stair areas to accomodate ease of access. The original stairs were straight run and very steep. One small room in the house off the front door was the answer. By removing the wall and opening up the space, we were able to create a more open plan that allowed for an "L return" stair with a much more friendly pitch.

Ken had definite ideas about the retirement home he wanted to create for his wife Rae and himself.
The kitchen had to go. With the change in the stair, an area was created to formulate a pantry wall that would house the refrigerator, ovens and pantry. This allowed a much more useful space within the kitchen proper for the cooktop, sink and counter space. With the Country French design elements of being developed by Rae and Michelle, the plan evolved into the space the couple had envisioned.

The old vinyl frame windows were replaced with wood inside and aluminum outside. New trim was designed by the Builder, Skip Pucci. The old brick fireplace was renovated to become more "Mission Style", with handmade tiles and a Jutol gas stove for the primary heat source of the home.

Much of the furniture was to be kept, and so working with photos and sizes of the pieces, we were able to add key new elements that brought the rooms together.

As the home was located on large area of land with wonderful gardens and groves of trees, the decision was made to keep the home's windows as unobstructed as possible. Through the use of creative design with soft fabric, we were able to achieve sun control and frame the amazing views.
